In recent years we have seen a significant increase in the clients keeping small numbers of livestock, in particular poultry, for their own food production.
Caring for livestock can be a very rewarding enterprise but requires a commitment to ensure their health and welfare is maintained. With years of experience providing veterinary care to local farms, here at the Avenue Veterinary Centre we are ideally equipped to be your first port of call for help and advice.
The type and amount of animals you keep will depend to a large degree on the amount of land you have (and how understanding your neighbours are!)
As with domestic pets, your livestock can be susceptible to infection and disease, as well as internal and external parasites. To protect your livestock from catching diseases certain species may need a course of vaccinations.
Your livestock may require a variety of veterinary treatments throughout the year to keep them healthy and happy and they will also need to be wormed and protected against pesky mites, lice and maggots.
At the Avenue Veterinary Centre, we are happy to advise how best to manage your smallholding regardless of your experience and the number of animals you have.
